An Italian Woman (from the series Nostalgia) 2022 Giclee Canvas Print, Polyester Fabric 101 cm x 127cm
Utilising oral histories and archival records, this work highlights issues of displacement, isolation and depression that reverberate through Italy-born migrant women and their generations. Sourced from her National Archives citizenship file, the layered portrait of my mother represents past and present and is obstructed by fabric to symbolise the vast cultural and linguistic barriers she has confronted in her lifetime. Companioned by excerpts taken from daily conversations, the work questions the quality of her ageing experience as a non-English speaking woman in Australia as she continues to struggle with grief, loneliness and regret.
